Professional

In the last five years, I have delivered professional development sessions within my school board on a variety of technology topics and applications, for example, Web 2.0, digital storytelling using Microsoft Photo Story 3 and Movie Maker, Moodle, Wikispaces, and Glogster. I created a sharing wiki for English teachers within our school board and continue to integrate technology into my classroom practice.

About

In addition to my formal experiences using these LMS environments, I also manage my own personal website on English teaching called The Cheeky Lit Teacher. My personal interest in effectively incorporating educational technology into the classroom led me to pursuing further studies through the University of British Columbia in the Master of Educational Technology (MET) program from 2011 and finishing in 2014.

I am open to future opportunities to use my learning from the MET program whether in the classroom with students or in a capacity to teach other teachers how to choose and use technology to positively effect student learning.

Although I was born in southwestern Ontario in Kincardine, I was raised for most of my life in northern Ontario, first living end-of-the-road north in Fraserdale, Abitibi Canyon which is enroute to the Moosonee via the Polar Bear Express, and then moving to South Porcupine (Timmins) during elementary school. I completed my undergrad and teacher education at Nipissing University, in North Bay, finishing in 1996.

For the last three years, I have been the teacher of the alternative education program College Link which is a District School Board Ontario North East (DSBONE) partnership with Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology (NCAAT). It is located within this college and aims to give 18-21 year olds a chance to finish their OSSD and take up to four college credits as dual credits towards both high school and college. I have taught part-time for the college recently and look forward to future such opportunities. I have experience using a few Learning Management Systems (LMS): Desire2Learn, Blackboard, and Moodle.

Background

Personal

My passion for cross-country skiing has played a role in my professional development. I took up the activity over ten years ago and with training over time it has become a sport to me. I now cross-train throughout the year and participate in a variety of races to challenge myself personally. My participation in sport has contributed to my professional development in terms of persistence, work ethic, goal setting, and commitment to long term goals. As a result, I now engage in numerous physical activities to continue to challenge my physical limits and stay young.

Then I returned to Timmins to teach for the Timmins Board of Education which was amalgamated into DSBONE in 1999. From 1996-2011, I taught primarily grades 9-12 English at Timmins High & Vocational School (THVS), and I completed my English Specialist in Stratford, Ontario which specialized in the teaching of Shakespeare. I performed the Student Success teacher role within THVS from 2010-12, and I taught the board-wide eLearning course, English Writer's Craft (EWC4U). I supervised several extra-curricular activities, the most significant being yearbook, cross-country running, cross-country skiing, and 30 Hour Famine.
