Entering the MET program, I knew that I wanted to make changes to my teaching practice to meet the needs of 21st Century learners; I was already an early adopter of technology, seeking out new digital tools to engage learners, but I was not sure that what I was choosing really mattered to their education because I was lacking philosophical grounding as to why and how I should use particular tools for best educational practices. In my entrance essay, I expressed my desire to use technology with purpose and, in particular, to stimulate meaningful critical thinking. The New London Group (1996) identified eight modalities of representation in which people need to be literate to be successful in our modern society: written language, oral language, visual representation, audio representation, tactile representation, gestural representation, rehearsing in one's mind's eye, and spatial representation. Thus, learners need to be challenged to develop literacy in all of these modalities that work together to create meaning.
